Another banana importer among other things, Wing Sang & Co is famous for having been formed by a partnership of Zhongshan Australian businessmen who went on to found four famous business in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Their department stores in Nanjing Road, Shanghai are still known as the “Big Four”.
Their Zhongshan origin is not remarkable as a significant proportion of Chinese Australians in Sydney came from this district. That their businesses operated at first in Campbell St is also unremarkable as this was a major focus of the Chinese Australian community before the establishment of the Haymarket in 1910. Campbell St was also long home to many well-know Chinese style cafes and restaurants that were patronised by all Sydney’s diners.
